Dan Predko's "Creature from the Bass Lagoon"
Floridian Dan "The Danimal" Predko was looking for a new bass with classic good looks and a healthy dose of B-movie ethic. Starting with a deep, cool, very 'lagoon-like' translucent green, the bass was then gently burst to black along all the edges, and given the corresponding two-tone scroll burst as well. Before the black went on, however, a 1/16" tape was laid out along the outline of the top and back, leaving a fine translucent green pinstripe or faux purfling to really set off the outline of the bass. The colors look oh-so-smooth on the spruce top, and really enhance the figured maple of the sides and back. Dan opted for a satin glow to complete the finish work, and the bass was finally outfitted with its blacked-out endpin, tailpiece and bridge (with silver aluminum adjusters), and a hefty, beautifully-functioning set of nickel individual tuners.
Strung up with prototype Innovations, the bass is loud, punchy and responsive, with an even tone across strings and up and down the fingerboard. Set up primarily for slap and pizz playing, the string tension is low and fingerboard clicks are crisp. So while this particular creature may indeed hail from the bass lagoon, it's got the refined hardware, tone and playability to match instruments from the most "civilized" of beginnings!
